YOUNG LADY WITH DOG

Signed and Dated 1938

A pre-WWII portrait of a lady seated in period clothing with a small dog.  The painting is signed, but the name of the artist is hard to read.  The painter obviously had formal training, as the proportions and composition are well thought out.  It appears to have been created over several sittings, with many layers of paint present.  It’s a vibrant painting in both colour and subject. The plaster copper leaf frame is complimentary to several details within the painting.  The frame has a few small repairs to the plaster, which are blended in rather well and only noticeable with a close inspection. The frame measures 24″x31″.

I was told it was painted in Massachusetts.  The subject in the painting is holding a cigarette, but be assured the painting itself has no offensive smells.

MasterCraft was definitely a maker of fine mid-century household goods. This once mighty American brand created products to last. This flashlight has, “MasterCraft” and “3” printed on the bullet end. It’s made of solid copper. The handle and some of the other parts are nickel-plated.

The flashlight certainly has its share of small dents and common wear, expected of a product dating around 60 years old. It measures nearly 10.5 inches long. The reflector housing is approximately 3 inches in diameter. As you can see, it works perfectly and takes three “D” sized batteries. It has a substantial feel in your hand and illuminates very well. Great classic design.

MasterCraft desk fan manufactured in 1947. It’s a truly well-built piece of vintage American manufacturing. Built just after World War II, it’s 8″ fan blade runs like an airplane propeller.

It runs very smoothly and fast. The motor and bearings have been cleaned, then lubricated. The fan also has been rewired, with a new power cord. There is one speed controlled by an on/off switch. This retro desk fan creates a massive amount of airflow for a unit measuring 10.5″ in height. The Chrome fittings and fan blade have been cleaned/ polished. The steel and cast iron parts received a fresh coat of paint.

This fan was built to last forever and it just received it’s 64 year service. It’s ready to give that retro look and quality to your office or home. It does have an oscillating mechanism at the rear, which does not work. I believe the gearing has worn away from years of use. It doesn’t affect the overall purpose or look of this brilliant desk fan. This is a solid metal original and after running for awhile the motor housing will become hot to the touch. This is normal, as there is no plastic on this fan.

There are many fantastic beaches along the Chicago North Shore and well into the city. The city beaches can all be visited free of charge, with North Avenue beach being the most popular.  I’m not sure of the total count, but there are beaches from Rogers Park to the South Side.

Evanston has six beaches with one being a dog beach. A beach token must be purchased to avoid the $8 charge per visit to enter onto an Evanston beach. I favor Lee Street beach in Evanston for no significant reason, but it’s definitely an attractive place to relax in the sun.

Wilmette has a fantastic beach at Gilson Park, but I’m not sure of the current cost. Winnetka, Highland Park and Lake Forest have a few notable beaches.  I’d recommend clicking on the town and city links I have on the side bar for more information about the lakeshore offerings in the various municipalities. There’s a lot to choose from along Lake Michigan’s shores, so have fun and explore a bit.

July has turned out to be a fantastic month for planting a new garden. We’re having plenty of daytime sunshine and rain in the late night hours. There’s still a fantastic supply of plant material in the Chicago area nurseries and there will be until the end of September. Now is a great time to have a landscape planned and implemented. Although consistent watering is essential to keep any new planting vibrant and healthy this time of year.

Watercolour Gardens creates gardens on Chicago’s North Shore and throughout the entire city.  We offer a free initial consultation and work with many types of properties and budgets.  Having been educated at Oxford in a progressive manner of designing gardens, Jason Hartong can use his design philosophy and adapt to either a contemporary or traditional spaces.  Reflecting the character and style of the home in the landscape is essential to creating a lasting, pleasing impression.

Watercolour Gardens can be contacted at 847.380.2699 or visit www.watercolourgardens.com for more details.  We look forward to serving you.

This is a project that was designed a couple of years ago.  I’m amazed at how far along the plantings have filled in during year two.  I’m currently working on several similar types of homes in Chicago and several on the North Shore.  It’s been a busy landscape design season, but here are some examples of the type of projects I’ve taken on this year.

If you would like a beautiful landscape designed and planted this summer, contact Watercolour Gardens at 1.847.380.2699 or visit our website for more details.
